What is Celiac disease?
Celiac disease is a debilitating digestive disorder triggered by gluten. People suffering from this disease suffer from a harmful reaction in their intestine on eating food materials containing gluten which blocks the ability of intestines to absorb certain nutrients. This leads to malnutrition due to vitamin deficiency and causes chronic autoimmune disorder even in a person eating a seemingly healthy diet
Symptoms of Celiac disease
This autoimmune disease is not diagnosed in most of the patients for as long as 10 years due to very varied symptoms in most persons. The most common symptoms of Celiac disease are fatigue, nausea, diarrhea, bloating, abdominal pain, lactose intolerance and constipation.
How serious Celiac disease can be?
Patients have increased risks of Anemia and Osteoporosis due to vital nutrition robbing property of Celiac disease. Moreover, people who have Celiac disease and don't take a diet having gluten have increased risks of bowel cancer and intestinal lymphoma. According to some researches people with undiagnosed Celiac disease are prone to death 4 times earlier.

Not much is known about the reasons for this disease except the fact that two genes are involved in it.
Why the rates of Celiac disease increasing?
There are several theories behind the reasons of Celiac disease out of which some are that the grains of today contain too much gluton that they had before, another theory says that kids today are exposed to gluton much earlier in their life and another one suggests that leaving in this too much hygiene world of ours has just reduced the capability of our immune system as we are exposed to lesser diseases.
Is a gluton free diet helpful in reducing weight?
The fact is that many of the gluton free foods are actually richer in fats than gluton containing foods. The over processed foods of nowadays are rich in fat and poor in fiber leading to constipation. Doctors suggest consulting a dietician for deciding your daily diet if you are suffering from Celiac disease.
Is gluton free diet helpful n case you don't have Celiac disease?
Very less conclusive research has been done of this aspect. The few researches done suggest that avoiding gluton containing foods is helpful for avoiding the Celaic disease.
Is gluton free labeling on food products reliable?
Varied products, from food items to cosmetics carry the labeling of being Celiac free. However in US there is still no FDA approved gluton standards to be followed in the products. In 27 other countries, products labeled as gluton free cannot have more than 20 parts of gluton per million. However there is some news that FA is finally getting serious about the role of gluton in the spread of Celiac disease and is working to define the standards.
Treatment of Celiac disease
There is at present no proper cure for Celiac and the treatment is based on symptoms which include dietary changes to avoiding gluton related food altogether. However if you have a doubt about your condition don't leave gluton immediately as it will cause misleading test results. As Celiac disease causes vitamin and mineral deficiency, supplements are prescribed to the patients and patients with extreme inflammation of intestine are also given steroids.
