What is post menopausal bleeding


Many women bleed after attaining menopause, the condition may be serious if early intervention and proper care is not done.

Many a times they may be cessation of menstrual bleeding for few months and again restarts, this is actually not postmenopausal bleeding.

Definition of menopause is actually permanently cessation of menstruation for 12 consecutive months without any other biological or physiological cause. Thus post menopausal bleeding actually means unscheduled vaginal bleeding after attaining menopause that is after 12 months of cessation of menstruation without any biological cause. Average age of Menopause in western countries is about 51 years while in India and other subcontinents it is about 45 years of age.

Post menopausal bleeding may be either spotting or mild staining or frank bleeding but neither can be taken lightly. Though in majority of cases postmenopausal bleeding may be innocent but it can be indication of some serious disease like endometrial cancer which is more common in females having diabetes.
